As we all know by now, Ramadan is a sacred time for Muslims worldwide, dedicated to reflection, family, and acts of generosity. The occasion is marked by a 30-day fast from sunrise to sunset, and Muslims use this time to deepen their spiritual and physical devotion by fasting and engaging in prayer. Ramadan is known to come once a year but the year 2030 will see a very special Ramadan – there will be not just one, but two Ramadans in the same year! You might be wondering how is that even possible, and for that I say keep reading to find out all the fascinating details you need to know!
How Are There Two Ramadan’s In 2030 Possible?
First, let’s set the foundation of how the Holy Month comes about each year. The timing of Ramadan is based on the Islamic lunar calendar, which follows the moon’s cycles. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, which has 365 days, the lunar calendar is shorter, with just 354 days. Because of this, Islamic dates shift forward by around 10 to 11 days each year. For example, in 2023, Ramadan started on March 22nd, but in 2024 it started on march 20th. Makes sense?
Now, fast forward to 2030. In the year 2030, this natural shift of dates will result in Ramadan occurring twice: first in January and then again in December! This is because the dates from 2029 shift 10-11 days forward in the following year, making it possible for Ramadan to occur again in December. But here’s another mind-boggling twist – this isn’t a new phenomenon. The last time the Islamic community experienced two Ramadan in the same year was back in 1997. And now, Muslims all over the world will get to experience it again after 33 years.
What About 2025?
So, while we wait for the moon to align and give us a double Ramadan in 2030, the question for right now is when will the Holy Month take place in 2025? Ramadan is expected to start around the evening of February 27, 2025, and end around March 29, 2025. As always, these dates depend on the sighting of the moon, which is officially confirmed by UAE authorities. With that said, be sure to stay tuned to Gulf Buzz as we’ll be the first to let know when the official dates for Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr have been announced!
