Residents of Abu Dhabi may now hire a driverless cab on Yas Island. It comes after a successful test phase of the service, which is set to end on December 23, according to state news agency Wam.
People may reserve the service via the Txai smartphone app, which is accessible on the Apple App Store and Google Play. Trips were free during the trial period; however, the firm has yet to divulge pricing for future phases.
During the testing, the taxis’ peak speed was set at 90 kilometres per hour, although the cars seldom exceed 65 kilometres per hour. A safety officer in the driver’s seat is only present to intervene if there is a problem.
Hassan Al Hosani, CEO of Bayanat, which operates the service, stated that residents may reserve trips as soon as they download the app and follow the on-screen instructions. To plan a trip, they must be at one of nine sites on Yas Island.
Future activities will entail expanding passenger operations in various places surrounding Abu Dhabi. The fleet is completely made up of electric and hybrid vehicles.
