Expo Dubai 2020 has a special place in our hearts forever and lives on as Dubai’s newest freezone and community. This reformed place will be known as Expo City Dubai!
HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president and prime minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, announced the opening of Expo City Dubai. The new 4.4k square metre district will officially open on 1 October 2022.
It will feature 80% of the Expo infrastructure, including Expo 2020 Dubai’s flagship pavilions, entertainment and technology offerings. The iconic Al Wasl Plaza and its 360-degree projection screen, designed by Chicago-based architects Adrian Smith and +Gordon Gill; Ashif Khan’s Garden in the Sky rotating observation tower; and the gravity-defying water feature by Los Angeles-headquartered WET (Water Entertainment Technologies).
Later this year, the Opportunity Pavilion, designed by AGi Architects, will become the Expo 2020 Dubai Museum. A new addition highlighting the history and impact of World Expos and celebrating the success of the six-month event.
“We announce the transformation of the Expo site into Expo City Dubai, a new city that illustrates Dubai’s ambitions,” tweeted Sheikh Bin Rashid. “After the historic success of Expo 2020 Dubai, which was visited by more than 24 million visitors and left an indelible mark on the 170-year history of World Expos,” he added.

The Expo City Will Be A Total Green Zone
Expo City will be car-free. Expo City will aim to provide various forms of ‘clean’ transportation. From e-scooters, e-bikes, buggies and pedestrianized areas, there will be plenty of options for those living and working in the new city.
The Expo City is a Free Zone
Expo City will be marked as a free-zone area in Dubai. This means that the new city will enable foreign investors and expats to have full ownership over businesses. Currently there are over forty free-zones in the UAE.
How Do I Get To Expo City Dubai?
Expo City Dubai will be reachable by Dubai Metro via Expo 2020 station. Plans are in place for buggies, scooters and bicycles to be the modes of transport used in the zone. Cars will not be allowed in Expo City Dubai.
The Pavilions From Expo 2020 Will Stay At Expo City Dubai.
Yes, several pavilions will remain. The UAE Pavilion, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Pavilion, Woman’s Pavilion, Vision Pavilion, Alif – the Mobility Pavilion and Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion will be at Expo City Dubai. Other pavilions that will still be able to be visited will be reworked versions of the Luxembourg, Australia, Pakistan, India, Morocco and Egypt pavilions.
Entry To Expo City Dubai Is Free
It will be free to enter Expo City Dubai but to visit the attractions there will be a fee. The price of tickets will be announced at a later date.
What Else Will Expo City Dubai Have?
Expo City Dubai will have a 10 kilometer bike track, a 5 kilometer running track and vast amounts of outdoor spaces. Restaurants, entertainment and retail venues will also be part of Expo City Dubai. People will also be able to live in homes in Expo City Dubai and business hubs will also be opening there. It will be the largest space in the world to be fully covered by a 5G-enabled network.

Expo City Dubai will be the first WELL-certified community in the region with a focus on creating an environment that is positive for health and wellness.
