Government Employees In Dubai – Rejoice!

Most government employees in Dubai already benefit from a two-and-a-half-day weekend (Friday half-day, Saturday, and Sunday). This initiative will extend that relaxation period, promising more time for family, leisure, and personal well-being.

While the DGHR has yet to specify which entities will be part of the pilot scheme, they emphasize that this move aims to “enhance workplace flexibility.” It ensures a safer and more comfortable working environment during the hot summer months and promotes a healthier work-life balance.

A survey conducted by the department found overwhelming support for reducing working hours during the summer, highlighting a collective eagerness for change that benefits employee well-being. Additionally, this initiative will help reduce energy consumption within government departments, making it a win-win for both employees and the environment.

The DGHR will closely monitor the initiative’s impact on employees and overall productivity. Studies from both within the UAE and around the world have shown that shorter work hours can significantly boost productivity. For example, Sharjah’s three-day weekend led to an 88% increase in productivity and a 90% rise in job satisfaction among its employees. Customers also reported higher satisfaction levels, with a 94% service satisfaction rate.

To ensure the initiative’s success and adaptability, the DGHR will regularly assess feedback and create a comprehensive report summarizing outcomes and recommendations. Abdullah Ali bin Zayed Al Falasi, director-general of the DGHR, stated, “The launch will further our vision to empower human resources by developing smart solutions and innovative policies to uplift Dubai’s competitiveness. The initiative aims to enhance employees’ quality of life and promote sustainable use of government resources, positioning Dubai as the ideal city for a superior lifestyle.”
