I have some amazing news for pregnant mamas working in the Abu Dhabi private sector. Starting Sunday, September 1, your maternity leave is getting an upgrade! An additional 30 days of fully paid leave will be added to your 60-day leave, bringing the new total up to 90 days of paid leave! This initiative, launched by the Abu Dhabi Social Support Authority, is a welcome relief for many, as 2 months of maternity leave just hasn’t been enough to balance recovery and newborn care. If this comes as good news to you or a soon-to-be mom in your life, then keep reading, and I’ll give you all the important updates you need to know!

Private Vs. Public Sector Maternity Leave
In the UAE, women employed in government jobs already enjoy 3 months of paid maternity leave. However, for those in the private sector, it’s typically a different story – up to 60 days of leave, with only the first 45 days fully paid. This discrepancy often discourages women in the private sector from expanding their families, making the new initiative a step in the right direction.

Supporting Emirati Families
This extended leave policy is part of the Emirati Family Growth Support Programme, an initiative by Abu Dhabi’s Department of Community Development (DCD). The goal? To help Emirati families thrive by offering better support for marriage and family growth.
Building Stronger Families & Communities
This initiative also helps strengthen family dynamics by encouraging fathers to play a more active role in raising their children. If this policy is extended to all pregnant Emirates, it could have a significant impact on Emirati families and residents’ families, leading to stronger community ties and a more cohesive society overall. This new leave extension is a stepping stone toward healthier families and a brighter future for the UAE!
