Imagine walking outside in the middle of summer in Abu Dhabi – without breaking a sweat. Sounds impossible, right? Well, not anymore! The capital city has just launched its first-ever air-conditioned outdoor walkway, making it one of the very few places in the world to offer such a futuristic cooling experience. This 70-metre-long corridor in Al Mamoura has been fully engineered to keep the heat out. The only other place to attempt something this ambitious? West Walk in Qatar, the world’s first air-conditioned pedestrian street. But Abu Dhabi is taking it a step further, turning this into a potential city-wide initiative to make outdoor spaces comfortable year-round. I have all the incredible details you want to know, so keep reading to find out more.

The cooling system is built directly into the floor, so the temperature is controlled right where you walk. While the roof filters sunlight while deflecting heat, and the walls absorb noise. Making this corridor an unexpectedly peaceful escape from the busy sunshine-lit streets.
You might be wondering – why here? Al Mamoura was chosen because it’s already a bustling pedestrian area, with plenty of people walking between cafés, offices, and residential buildings. The goal is to test this cooling concept in a high-traffic location before potentially expanding it to other areas. This way the people at Urban Design Division at the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) can gather real-time insights on how well the system works before we roll it out on an even larger scale.
Right now, the walkway uses a traditional cooling system, but Abu Dhabi isn’t stopping there. Planners are exploring solar power and other sustainable technologies to make future cooling corridors even more energy-efficient. The next step is to find a way to integrate renewable energy and eco-friendly elements into future projects.
With temperatures often soaring past 45°C, stepping outside during summer in the UAE usually feels like walking straight into an oven. But this project is proof that even the hottest cities can find ways to make outdoor spaces liveable all year round. If this pilot program is successful, we could see entire air-conditioned streets and pathways across Abu Dhabi, redefining urban life in extreme climates.
