Deliveroo came to a halt in the UAE over the weekend as delivery riders refused to work due to plans to reduce their salaries and extend their working hours. Deliveroo attempted to lower the delivery charge for riders from AED 10.25 to AED 8.75 while also increasing the maximum day to 14 hours. However, Deliveroo riders refused to work on Sunday night, causing the famous food-delivery service to go offline.

“We’ve listened to your feedback on these proposed changes and have decided that at the moment they do not best reflect how riders in Dubai want to work,” the company said in an official statement. “For that reason, we will not be making the proposed changes we had communicated. We are currently facing an issue with our rider agencies, where riders are striking and refusing to attend their shifts or deliver orders.”
Deliveroo said that the modifications will allow riders to “maximise earnings” in a fiercely competitive environment with rival delivery providers. As meal orders began to arrive on Sunday night, Deliveroo’s headquarters released this warning to those affected.
