A Creative Extravaganza: Showcasing The Best In Design
Downtown Design has always been the ultimate platform for innovative design, and this year is no exception. This four-day event will unveil a myriad of breathtaking installations crafted by renowned design studios and imaginative collectives.
‘Light Gazing’: Where Art Meets Sustainability
One of the showstoppers at this year’s event is the ‘Light Gazing’ exhibit, a remarkable collaboration between Ultra Arte and Light and Lives. What’s more, this dazzling installation isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s a testament to sustainability, perfectly aligning with the theme of ‘Future Living Spaces’ at Downtown Design. Afsal Mohamed, the founder of Light and Lives, sums it up best: “We’re ticking so many boxes here — sustainability, architecture, art, technology, nature, it’s everything.”

Crafting Light & Beauty: A Team Effort
Anna de Florian, the founder of Ultra Arte, and Afsal Mohamed, joined forces to lead the creative charge behind ‘Light Gazing.’ Their vision was brought to life with the help of a dedicated team of 40 individuals. Anna emphasises the collaborative nature of the project, saying, “Projects like this are always a team effort.”
Innovative Material & Craftsmanship
The foundation of ‘Light Gazing’ lies in sustainable translucent acrylic, sourced all the way from Italy. The material undergoes a meticulous fabrication process, led by 25 skilled craftsmen. This process includes cutting, shaping, welding, and installing lighting fixtures. It’s truly a labor of love, fueled by the passion for design excellence. As Anna explains, “It comes from an internal need to create something beautiful and valuable.”
Dancing with Sunlight: Nature’s Ever-changing Palette
While ‘Light Gazing’ will have its own illumination, the real magic happens when natural sunlight pierces through the colourful acrylic. As the sun’s angle and brightness shift throughout the day, vibrant patterns and intriguing shadows dance across the installation. At sunset, built-in lighting adds a touch of enchantment. Afsal Mohamed adds, “When you walk in, you’ll see one design, but when you walk out, it’ll be something entirely different.”

Sustainability Beyond the Exhibit: A Charitable Legacy
Beyond its visual splendor, ‘Light Gazing’ serves a greater purpose. Its modular components will be auctioned off individually, providing an opportunity for interested buyers. What’s more, the proceeds from these auctions will be donated to charitable sustainability causes, aiming to offset the carbon footprint generated from organizing the exhibit since its inception.
So, as Downtown Design 2023 ushers in a world of innovation and creativity, ‘Light Gazing’ promises to be a radiant centrepiece, captivating the hearts of art enthusiasts, children, and those with a passion for sustainable design. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness this awe-inspiring blend of art, nature, and innovation.
