The UAE is on the brink of a travel revolution with the upcoming launch of Etihad Rail’s passenger trains. While the railway is currently used for freight, passenger services are set to begin soon, offering a faster, greener, and more efficient way to travel across the 7 Emirates. Imagine reaching your destination in nearly half the time it takes by car – travelling between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, for example, will take just 50 minutes. This rail network will also extend to Oman, making cross-border travel smoother and quicker for the GCC. So, come with me, and I’ll give you all the latest updates on the Etihad Rail!

First Stop: Fujairah
Fujairah will host the first passenger station located in the heart of Sakamkam. Spain’s CAF is designing the trains, which will accommodate over 400 passengers and offer first-class, business, and economy seating options. With speeds reaching up to 200 kilometres per hour, this will be one of the most efficient ways to travel between major UAE cities. After the Fujairah passenger station is successfully functioning, soon will follow additional stations across the Emirates – for which a timeline has not been announced yet.
Paying With Your Nol Card
Etihad Rail has partnered with Dubai’s RTA, so you might soon be able to use Dubai’s nol card for booking your train tickets. This partnership ensures that planning your trip and paying for it will be as smooth as your journey across the UAE.

Connecting The 7 Emirates
The passenger network will link 11 cities and regions across the UAE, from Al Sila in the west to Fujairah in the east, with stops in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and other key locations. Commuting between cities will be significantly quicker – expect reduced travel times of 30% to 40% compared to road travel.
Connecting UAE To Oman
Construction for the Oman connection, now officially named Hafeet Rail, began in May 2024. This route will connect Sohar in Oman with Abu Dhabi, slashing travel times. For instance, the journey from Abu Dhabi to Sohar will take just 1 hour and 40 minutes, and from Al Ain to Sohar, it will only take 47 minutes.

Luxury On Board
Travelling with Etihad Rail is all set to be fast, comfortable and luxurious for everyone onboard. Passengers can expect amenities like infotainment systems, charging stations, and plenty of legroom. The design and service are inspired by the luxury of the Orient Express, thanks to a partnership with Italian luxury hospitality brand Arsenale.

Etihad Railways Already In Action With Freight Trains
While passenger services are eagerly awaited, Etihad Rail’s freight services are already operational, keeping heavy trucks off the roads and reducing CO2 emissions. By 2050, Etihad Rail plans to cut road transport emissions by 21%, a significant step towards the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 strategy.
Etihad Rail is part of a broader effort to make the UAE more sustainable, efficient, and interconnected. Whether you’re travelling across the country or into Oman, this new rail system promises to transform the way people move around the region.
