According to an official tweet from Oman News Agency, Oman Rail and Etihad Rail have concluded an agreement under which the UAE national railway network will extend a railway line to connect to Oman’s Sohar Port.
To make this connection, an equally-owned business called Oman-Etihad Rail Company will be formed. Emirates News Agency (ENA) WAM, ‘The newly formed firm will have a total investment capacity of $3 billion to design, develop, and operate a railway network connecting Sohar Port to the UAE National Rail Network.’
The new firm is responsible for laying the groundwork and creating a work plan for the project, as well as designing, developing, and operating the rail network in accordance with the norms of the two countries.
This new initiative will aid both countries’ national economies by creating a superb infrastructure between the two neighboring states. Travel between communities will be improved by providing seamless transportation alternatives between Oman and the UAE’s economic and industrial zones. Tourism will be strengthened in both countries on a broader scale.
The 303-kilometer railway line will connect Sohar and Abu Dhabi, reducing travel time to one hour and 40 minutes. Passengers from Al Ain will arrive in Oman in approximately 47 minutes. While passenger trains will travel at speeds of up to 200 km/h, freight trains will move at speeds of up to 120 km/h. The further timeline of the new project will keep updating.
