RTA Update: This Dubai Metro Station Will Have A New Name From Today

Attention, Dubai Metro riders! You might want to double-check those station names on your morning commute! RTA has just announced another metro station makeover. And this time, it’s GGICO that’s getting a rebrand. Say hello (again) to Garhoud station! Yep, the name Garhoud might sound familiar – because it is. When the Red Line first launched way back in 2009, the station near the Garhoud Bridge was originally called, well, Garhoud. But in true Dubai fashion, things took a corporate turn not long after, and the station was renamed GGICO. Let’s just say it was a nod to the Gulf General Investment Company.

Fast forward to April 2025, and the RTA has decided it’s time to bring it full circle. Out with GGICO, and back in with Garhoud. It’s giving retro revival, isn’t it?

Déjà Vu? Dubai Loves a Name Swap

Now, if you’re thinking, “Wait, haven’t we done this dance before with other stations?”, you’re absolutely spot on. This definitely isn’t the first time we’ve had a Dubai metro station going back to its former name. Let’s talk about Sobha Realty, the station formerly (and originally) known as Dubai Marina. For years, it went by the name Damac Properties, thanks to a sponsorship deal. But then, plot twist, it returned to its roots as Dubai Marina, giving longtime residents and tourists alike a dose of nostalgia. But of course, in classic Dubai style, it didn’t stop there. Today, the station is christened Sobha Realty.

And if that wasn’t enough renaming action for you, just last month in March, Al Khail station on the Red Line also got a new title. It’s now called Al Fardan Exchange. Yep, blink and you might miss a metro name change in this city!

So what’s the takeaway? In Dubai, nothing stays the same for too long; not even metro stations. One day you’re riding to GGICO, and the next you’re cruising into Garhoud, reminiscing about 2009. It’s part of what keeps this city exciting and keeps us all on our toes.

More Than Just Name Games

But wait, there’s more! The RTA isn’t stopping at name changes. There are a bunch of upgrades rolling in! Keep your eyes peeled for brand-new, sleeker signage popping up across various stations. It’s not just a style glow-up – these signs are designed to make getting around way easier, especially if you’re new to the city or just visiting.

They’re clearer and definitely more user-friendly, so you won’t find yourself scratching your head at the station wondering which exit to take. Basically, your commute is about to feel a whole lot seamless.

And here’s one that’s got all the tech-lovers buzzing: the RTA is gearing up to launch phone-based payments for metro rides very soon! That means no more fumbling for NOL cards; just tap your smartphone and go. Because in Dubai, even your commute is getting smarter.

So next time you’re hopping on the Red or Green Line, stay alert! Your usual stop might just have a new name, a new look, or a new way to pay. Who said your daily commute had to be just so-so?

Now, over to you. What do you think the next name change will be?
