I’m sure by now we’ve all tried our hand at camping in Al Qudra, Hatta, Kor Fa Khan or any other desert spot you can think of. And I’m sure it was lots of fun, and you could totally see plenty of stars, but did it really feel like you were stargazing? Because in my opinion, if you have to tilt your head and squint your eyes just to see Orian’s Belt, then there was definitely way too much light pollution around you, even out in the middle of nowhere. But lo and behold, the solution to all our stargazing problems. This is the ‘Milky Way Spot’ AKA the darkest spot in the UAE. And the best part is it really does serve true to its name – you can completely see our very own Milky Way Galaxy while you’re here. So, come with me, and I’ll spill all the beans to help you start planning your next camping trip!

Welcome To Al Quaa AKA The ‘Milky Way Spot’
At Al Quaa, the night sky unveils a mesmerising tapestry of stars, constellations, and planets (easily identifiable with apps like Skyview Lite). The spotlight, however, belongs to our cosmic home, the Milky Way. This luminous band of star clusters paints the night sky without the need for telescopes or fancy gadgets.
When & How To Reach Al Quaa
Nestled at 23.604633, 54.750256, Al Quaa beckons stargazers on a scenic 90-minute drive from Abu Dhabi towards Al Ain. No need use for a 4X4 to reach this place, unless you plan to venture off-road. Just Stick to the packed sand road if you’re rolling in a regular car. For optimal stargazing, choose a night with a new Moon and clear skies, as the moons glow can hinder the view. Keep an eye on the weather forecast, avoiding foggy days for enhanced visibility.
Navigating The Dos & Don’ts Of UAE’s Darkets Spot
Besides the very obvious “Do Not Litter,” here are some handy tips to keep in mind:
- Flashlights and Floodlights: Carry them for nighttime activities and to light your walking paths (but please do not use these lights to disturb other campers in the vicinity).
- Choose a Serene Spot: Try to get as far away from the main road as possible to avoid noise and car headlights ruining your natural ambitions.
- Pack Light and Responsibly: Dispose of all of your trash properly, please!
- Essentials: Water, food, warm clothes, a blanket and anything else cosy you can think of to make this a comfortable stargazing experience for you.
- Early Arrivals: Set up early, be mindful of others, and switch off car lights.
- Safety First: Avoid full Moon nights. Don’t go off-roading alone or in cars that cannot handle desert sand. Be visible to other campers around you so that you are not put in harm’s way by their cars or 4X4. And keep in mind that this is a desert, so that means there are no bathrooms nearby. If you are setting up a campfire, please be knowledgeable on basic fire safety and barbecue set up rules and equipment.
So, gear up for an unforgettable cosmic journey at Al Quaa, where the stars await to paint your night with celestial wonders.
