Every year, a celestial phenomenon captivates stargazers and astronomy enthusiasts around the world—the Perseid meteor shower. Known for its incredible speed and brilliance, this celestial display during late July and August never fails to leave spectators in awe. In 2023, the Perseids are expected to be particularly impressive, offering a dazzling show with over 100 meteors per hour.

The Ideal Year For Observation
Astrologers and astronomers are eagerly anticipating the Perseid meteor shower in 2023, as it presents a perfect opportunity for observation. The moon will be only 10 percent illuminated during this time, minimising its brightness and allowing for better visibility of the meteors streaking across the night sky. With a predicted rate of over 100 meteors per hour, this year’s Perseids are set to be a breathtaking sight.
Understanding The Phenomenon
Sarath Raj, the Project Director of Amity Dubai Satellite Ground Station and AmiSat, sheds light on the science behind the Perseid meteor shower. “From roughly July 23 to August 22 every year, the Perseid meteor shower occurs, with its peak falling between late night on August 12 and morning on August 13,” explains Raj. The shower is caused by debris from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, which has an orbital period of about 133 years.
The radiant point of the Perseid meteor shower is in the constellation Perseus, giving the shower its name. Raj emphasises that these meteors exhibit remarkable speed and brilliance. They are primarily composed of tiny particles ranging in size from grains of sand to pea-sized objects. As they enter Earth’s atmosphere at speeds exceeding 60 kilometres per second, the friction with the air causes them to burn up, resulting in the mesmerising streaks of light across the night sky.
A Colourful Meteor Shower Display
One of the enchanting aspects of the Perseid meteor shower is the colourful display it offers. The meteors often leave long-lasting trails and can be seen in hues of blue, green, yellow, or white. These vibrant streaks of light add an extra touch of magic to the celestial spectacle.
Minimal Disturbance From Moonlight
In 2023, the Perseid meteor shower will have minimal interference from moonlight, making it an optimal viewing experience. Raj explains that on August 13, the meteor shower will be visible from Dubai starting at approximately 8:55 pm local time. The radiant point will rise above the eastern horizon, and the shower will continue until around 5:25 am the following morning. Dubai residents will have the opportunity to witness the meteor shower in all its splendor between 8:55 pm and 5:25 am. This is especially ideal because the peak of the shower coincides with the new moon, resulting in minimal interruption from moonlight.
Previous Marvels And Future Encounters
Earlier this year, residents of the UAE were treated to the wonder of the June Bootid meteor shower. Raj highlights that the shower was visible from Dubai, starting from sunset until around 5:02 am when its radiant point set below the western horizon. Named after the constellation Bootes, this meteor shower was active from June 22 to July 2, 2023.
Looking ahead, Raj assures that the trajectory of Comet Swift-Tuttle, the source of the Perseids, indicates that Earth is safe from a collision for the next 2,000 years. So, astronomy enthusiasts can continue to anticipate the awe-inspiring Perseid meteor shower for many years to come.
Prepare For An Unforgettable Meteor Show
As the Perseid meteor shower approaches in 2023, it’s time to mark your calendars and prepare for an extraordinary display of shooting stars. Find a comfortable spot under the open sky, away from city lights, and immerse yourself in the wonder of the Perseids. Marvel at the incredible speed and brilliance of the meteors as they traverse the heavens, leaving trails of colour in their wake. Let this celestial spectacle be a reminder of the vast beauty and mystery of our universe.
