The UAE has announced that the midday work break for outdoor workers will begin on June 15th. According to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), workers must take a break from 12 pm to 3 pm daily until September 15th. This annual summer rule, now in its 20th year, aims to protect workers from the extreme summer heat. During these hours, employers must provide shaded or indoor areas for workers to rest, ensuring their health and safety. Keep reading for all the details you need to know.

Hefty Fines For Non-Compliance
Employers who fail to comply with these rules face significant penalties. The fine is AED 5,000 per worker, with a maximum of AED 50,000 for multiple violations. To ensure compliance, the Ministry conducts inspection tours and encourages the reporting of violations through its call centre, website, and smart application.
Exceptions To The Rule
While the midday break is crucial for worker safety, there are exceptions for essential services. Mohsin Ali Al Nassi, Assistant Undersecretary for Inspection Affairs, stated that the break has become a key part of UAE’s business culture, highlighting its importance for health and safety. Exceptions are allowed for work that is necessary for technical reasons or emergencies affecting public welfare, like infrastructure maintenance or utility repairs. Companies must still provide shaded areas, cooling equipment, hydration, and first aid facilities during these hours.
Promoting Awareness & Compliance
The MoHRE, along with its partners, conducts awareness campaigns and site visits to educate both workers and employers about the importance of following these rules. By raising awareness and ensuring adherence, the Ministry aims to maintain a safe working environment during the hottest months of the year.
